Labour won its second high profile by election gain in 2011 last night, when Brian Oosthuysen (right) was elected in the Rodborough division on Gloucestershire County Council. The victory was declared following a nailbiting re-count. Oosthuysen took Labour from its fourth place finish in 2009 to a narrow three vote victory on a swing of almost 20%. It is understood that Labour's increase in votes came mostly from a slump in the green vote, but falls in both the Lib Dem and Conservative votes suggests some voters switched from those parties direct to Labour.
The result is particularly good for the party as the ward is located in the marginal parliamentary constituency of Stroud, held by Labour's David Drew from 1997-2010. Stroud is one of the 18 southern seats approved by the NEC for early selection. Whoever is successful in being selected as Labour's candidate will take great heart from yesterday's result.
