Ed Balls to lead Labour's campaign in East of England

Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls is to lead Labour's local election campaigns in the East of England. The move signals the importance attached by the party to performing well in key council contests across the political south. The region is home to a number of key marginal parliamentary seats and May's local elections represents an important test for Labour.

The appointment was announced to the NEC earlier this month by Deputy Leader Harriet Harman. Labour only runs three local authorities in the east of England - Luton, Thurrock & Stevenage councils; howevever, it is targeting a number of authorities where Labour is well placed to take control of the council. Targets are though to include Norwich, Ipswich, Waveney & Great Yarmouth.
